“If you talk to a man in a language he understands, that goes to his head. If you talk to him in his own language, that goes to his heart.” These words were said by Nelson Mandela, a man with an extraordinary talent for negotiation, and an outstanding public speaker, and I think that they are one of the most beautiful ways of showing why we learn languages. Obviously, there are many reasons to learn languages and each student has his or her own objectives, intentions and motivations. In the end, however, learning a new language means opening a door to a new way of seeing and understanding the world, and it is a way of becoming closer to the people who speak that language. We should therefore never miss the chance to learn new languages, because the more languages we speak, the greater our understanding of the world will be.
